My name is John Ranson and I am declaring my candidacy for Archuleta County Commissioner District 1. My wife Janna and I moved to Archuleta County with our two children, Alysha and Ryan, in 1996. During the past twelve years we have had the opportunity to meet and work with wonderful people from all walks of life in this county. It is my strong belief that the people are what make Archuleta County a magnificent place to call home.
Archuleta County is experiencing problems on multiple fronts. I am convinced we are facing a critical juncture for this county and the communities in which we live. It is my firm belief that status quo, or how we have been governed in the past, is not an option. Change is needed—positive change for the betterment of our county.
Our county government is in desperate need of leadership, teamwork and an atmosphere that will allow dedicated individuals to work toward common goals for our mutual benefit. To accomplish our goals we must stop the practice of divisive behavior. My major objective in this arena is to establish a positive and professional atmosphere in county governance.
Citizens of Archuleta County will face many important decisions as we recover from the financial crisis and economic downturn. My background in public finance provides me the experience to deal with the problems we are facing. I have seventeen years experience in public finance including seven years as CEO and Director of a company regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Our company was recognized as the most active financial advisor and bond underwriter for cities, counties, utilities and school districts in the State of Kansas. It is my heartfelt desire to apply my knowledge and experience in public finance to make positive changes in our county’s financial future.
My area of responsibility as a member of the Archuleta County Citizens’ Financial Task Force this past eight months has been to examine and analyze our county’s financial records so the Task Force could make detailed recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners. I have acquired a comprehensive understanding of our county’s financial condition as a result of my work. If elected, I am committed to continue “digging deep” to ensure the financial information we are receiving as County Commissioners is accurate, detailed and made available to the public in a timely manner. The first recommendation the Task Force made was to hire a qualified Finance Director as a step towards needed financial reforms. This recommendation, which the BoCC recently accomplished, will help ensure that we have a thorough check and balance system in place between the Treasurer’s Office, County Administrators and County Commissioners. Financial accountability will be my top priority as your County Commissioner.
Our county is at an important crossroad and we have much to do. 2008 will present all of us with choices that will determine the future of Archuleta County. My goal in announcing my candidacy for the Board of County Commissioners is to ask for your support in assisting me to bring about the changes we need to restore vitality to Archuleta County.
I have chosen to pursue the petition option to secure a place on the Republican primary election ballot. The petition option will allow me the opportunity to visit with many of the citizens of Archuleta County and listen to your ideas, views and concerns. Together we can accomplish great things!
